It’s remarkable because of just how much it took to track him down. It took a lot of time, a lot of money, a lot information, a lot of leg work, a lot of politics and actually a lot of luck. It also took the determination, perhaps even the obsessiveness, of one CIA agent in particular who never gave on even the most tenuous of leads. In fact, the first twelve years of their CIA career was spent on nothing else than tracking down Usama Bin Laden. You know, I have to be honest with you, I think sometimes I give up on things too quickly. If something doesn’t happen right away, then I figure it probably isn’t going to happen. If my prayer isn’t answered, if a person isn’t healed, if salvation doesn’t come to someone I shared the good news with once, well then it’s a lost cause, right? Wrong. God isn’t one and it’s done, God wants us to pursue our goals, our objectives, with a relentless determination. It may take longer than we think, or want. It may take years or decades, but if it’s something worth pursuing, we shouldn’t be willing to give us so easily. Just imagine what this world would be like had that one agent given up on the search for Usama Bin Laden after just a few years. Imagine what this world would be like if we gave up on pursuing God’s kingdom here on Earth after just a couple tries. One morning before Christmas, a person decided to pay for the coffee of the person standing in line behind them. That person then did the same for the person standing behind them, and so on and so forth it went…for three hours and 228 customers. (Can you imagine being the Grinch to end the streak, or being the first person to have to pay for your own coffee after hundreds of others got a gift?) We like hearing those kinds of stories because they’re inspiring, but we have something much better to pass along than free coffee. Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins on the cross, and then passed that along to everyone behind him; which is pretty much everyone on the planet. People in that coffeehouse were eager pass along the blessing of free coffee, but how eager are we to pass along the blessing of free redemption, forgiveness, salvation and eternal life? 228 people got free coffee in three hours all because one person decided to be generous. How many lives will be changed in 2013 all because one person, you, decides to pass along the good news? Thu, 03 Jan 2013 08:18 MDT KNKT.com http://audio.calvaryabq.org/knkt/goodnews/20130103.mp3 http://www.knkt.com/goodnews.asp Good News of the Day Luke 2:19 “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke chapter two is typically a passage talked about at Christmas time, but it occurred to me that this particular passage works quite well for New Year’s as well. Mary experienced many unusual, amazing, powerful things in her life, especially surrounding the birth of her son. I like how the Bible tells us that she treasured all these things and pondered them, which is something I think we could benefit from doing more of. The New Year that lies ahead of us holds many amazing, unusual, unexpected and powerful events. God’s always at work, and I’m excited to see what he’ll do in 2013. However, if you’re at all like me, our tendency is to just quickly go from one thing to another, often without much of pause (there’s already Valentine’s stuff up in stores). Perhaps we should be more like Mary, and take the time to treasure moments, to ponder events, to cherish and consider all that God does in our lives. In short, perhaps we shouldn’t always be looking for the next big thing, but take the time to enjoy the thing that’s happening now. I think it would be good to have a more Mary like attitude when it comes to treasuring and pondering the moments we’ll experience in the New Year. I also think it will greatly benefit our relationship with and understanding of God, and that’s always good news. Since being published by Victor Hugo back in 1862, the story has found tremendous popularity, especially in its musical form. The latest version of the story, a live stage musical/movie hybrid, continues to do well at the box office and is a shoo-in for numerous Academy Award nominations. The funny thing is, Les Miserables is very much a story about God. It’s about God’s mercy, his forgiveness, his power to change a life, and it never tries to hide the fact that it’s about God. In a culture that’s so concerned with the separation of church and state, not offending the beliefs of others, making sure that Christmas isn’t too Christian, how does this story remain one our enduring favorites. Well, I think it’s because deep down inside, whether they realize it or not, people all know they need God. They know they need is grace, his forgiveness, and his love. The story of Les Miz resonates so deeply because it echoes our own need for a second chance, to have our sins forgiven and to be made into a new person, a free person. The popularity of this story, and especially its latest film version, gives us a unique opportunity to share the good news, to explain the need and longing people have that keeps drawing them back to this story. Will we make the most of this opportunity? I hope so. One of the main things that has people talking is the conversion of a former bad guy, indeed one of Spider-Man’s arch nemesis’, into a good guy. Truly, this character was born-again, in just about every sense of how evangelicals use the word. Now some think it was too easy, some think this character has been too evil for too long to have their nature so quickly changed, some don’t think he’s really changed at all and…does all of this sound familiar? These are the very objections some raise about the idea of being born-again in Jesus. It’s too easy, some people are too bad, it doesn’t really change anything. I remember wondering about that one-time as I was praying with a friend in college to receive Christ. I kept wondering, “Does this really work? Just a few words and, presto-chango, their eternity is changed forever?” I remember hearing very clearly from the Spirit of God two simple words, “Just believe.” Does conversion, being born again, after hearing the good news really work? Is a life really changed by the simple story and a short prayer? Only God truly knows the heart, so it isn’t up to us to determine when it “works” and who it can “work” on, it’s our job simply to believe that it does work, and that it works so well, it can change anybody who comes in contact with the good news we share.
