In the Bible, Jesus had a gift for taking everyday situations and using them to illustrate eternal truths. Not much has changed. Every day you and I encounter situations that point us back to biblical truth; if we'll just take the time to pay attention. That's what The Good News of the Day is all about; helping you notice how everyday circumstances illustrate the good news of the Bible. You may be surprised at the ways God will speak to us through the ordinary events of everyday life. The Good News of the Day; eternal truths from everyday life.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” From Philip Yancey’s Prayer: Does it Make a Difference? “…we would accomplish more for the world by praying faithfully than by walking into the White House…with our suggestions. Our personal advice would most likely be misguided, but prayer for leaders summons an invisible spiritual force that can have real effects…” President Obama has made quite a splash recently with his official endorsement of same-sex marriage. It’s certainly helped him on the campaign trail, as he’s raised millions of dollars from supporters for his re-election bid. Of course, this stance has many Christians rather disturbed and upset, and rightfully so. Yet whenever I see headlines about the president, especially when it comes to his stance on contentious issues like gay marriage, I can’t help but be haunted by Yancey’s words. I’m sure many of us would love to give the president all kinds of advice and a few pieces of our mind, but the truth is to have a real effect on our leaders, and thereby on the world, what they need is not our two cents, but our faithful, sincere prayers. That isn’t always easy, but it is what’s necessary, and the change that would result from that flood of prayer wouldn’t be anything less than good news.

I John 4:10 “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” A few years back, scientists discovered a baffling new mystery. After conducting brain scans of various couples, they discovered that ten percent of couples had the same level of passion for their spouse as they did twenty years ago. Previous research suggested that “true love” and romantic feelings inevitably faded within the first fifteen months, so how couples could still have the same chemical reaction in their brains in response to their romantic feelings for someone twenty years later had scientists scratching their heads. Now, I don’t claim to have the answer to this mystery, but I do think I understand how love can last. The fact is, love doesn’t rely on feelings. Sure feelings play a part of it, but “true love” is so much more than that. Love is a choice, and in fact the greatest demonstration of love was when Jesus Christ chose to die on cross and rise from the dead. I know that’s not typically the first thing we think of when we think of romance, but that was love on display as God died in our place to pay the price for our sin so that we might be free and have eternal life. If we truly want to know love for a lifetime, we need to get to know this love that God has displayed to us, and then emulate it in our own lives. If we can do that, then we’ll have some pretty crazy brain scans of our own as we learn to love like the God who is love.

1 Corinthians 3:10-13 “But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work.” Minecraft is a game with simple graphics and a simple premise; build stuff with blocks. Now, that may not sound very exciting, but trust me, once you build your first castle with a secret passageway underneath, you’ll be hooked. After all, who doesn’t like building cool forts with blocks? All that building, however, got me thinking about life, and what exactly we’re building with it. We have our choice of building blocks in life, and we can either build something with value that will last, or something that looks great now but will eventually burn and disappear. The good news is when be build on the foundation we’ve been given in Jesus Christ, when we follow the blueprint of God our architect and when we listen to the instructions of our foreman the Holy Spirit, we can be sure that our lives will be built into something truly worthwhile. Which, like playing with the virtual building blocks in Minecraft, is actually a lot of fun.

Luke 13:34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” A few years back I reminded my Bible study to make sure they wished God a happy Mother’s Day. Most were fairly shocked by such a suggestion; after all, it makes sense to wish our Heavenly Father a happy Father’s Day, but a happy Mother’s Day? My friends were sure that I had stumbled into some cultish goddess worship or something. However, I simply pointed out the fact that in the beginning God created man and woman in his image. If that’s true, then all those things that make for great moms came from God. In fact, you read through the Bible, and you see that very thing; God is compassionate, he is caring, he is nurturing, he is comforting, he hurts when we hurt, and someday he promises to wipe away every tear and heal every wound. I see those qualities and so many more reflected in every loving mother. I’m not suggesting that we call God mother or anything like that, but I’m merely pointing out the he can be included on Mother’s Day just as much as on Father’s Day because every godly mother draws her great strength of character from the One whose image she is made in, and in my experience (with my own mom and the mother of my two kids), that’s very good news indeed.

Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” When you see a one-way sign, you wouldn’t expect people to ignore it and go any way they want because that’s going to cause problems. When you come to a freeway off-ramp, you wouldn’t expect people to decide that it should also function as a freeway on-ramp because that would really make things a mess. Why is it, then, that Jesus says that he is the way, the only way, the one way, to get to heaven, that people decide that he doesn’t really mean it and we can go any way we want and still get there? Look, being told that you can only go one-way on a street or one-way on a freeway off-ramp isn’t being restrictive or narrow minded, it’s just stating a fact. You ignore that fact and you put yourself in danger. When Jesus said he was the way to heaven, he wasn’t being restrictive or narrow minded, he was announcing good news. He was turning a dead end street into a street without an outlet; an outlet that goes one-way. Where there didn’t used to be a way to heaven, he made a way through his death and resurrection and because of his love for us. There’s one-way to heaven, and that’s good news, not narrow mindedness.
